About Lin

Lin Lavery believes the voice of every citizen is important to the community and knows the power of individual involvement in government.  She is a community leader and consensus builder.  As Selectman, Lin will listen to issues and concerns, effectively prioritize those issues and develop the best team possible to find solutions.  Lin will also advocate for Greenwich’s most vulnerable citizens who may not be able to advocate for themselves.  She knows our town.  She is an effective manager and a dedicated leader.

Lin moved to Greenwich almost 25 years ago and has been active in the broad spectrum of Greenwich institutions beginning as a board member of the Glenville School PTA.  Since then, Lin has served on the boards of the Greenwich Library, The United Way of Greenwich, Greenwich High School PTA, and Hortulus (a garden club).  Lin has served as the vice chairman of the Commission on Aging, where as chairman of the Greenwich Conference on Aging, Lin brought together 80 stakeholders to build consensus for senior priorities.  Lin knows our community and knows first hand many of the important institutions that make up our town.

Lin served as president of the Greenwich Junior League from 1996-1997. Through the Junior League, she was introduced to hundreds of women who shared her value of service to the community and she learned firsthand the importance of community partnerships.  Lin became chair of the project to research the need for a crisis nursery in our area. After six years of work with various town boards and commissions, Lin helped open the doors of Kids in Crisis, which has now served thousands of children at risk of abuse and neglect.  The success of Kids in Crisis demonstrates the power of the individual working to form consensus and the importance of community partnerships.  Lin has proven her ability to work collectively with many factions and has tackled difficult issues to meet the needs of the community.

Recently, Lin helped create the Selectmen’s Nominations Advisory Committee.  Her experience with this committee makes her uniquely qualified to select the best people for our town’s boards and commissions.  Serving as chair of this committee has given Lin the opportunity to work with all of the Town’s boards and commissions.   She has helped define the skills required to serve in the numerous town positions and to identify people qualified to serve in those positions.  Lin understands the skills sets, the time and the commitment required to effectively serve our community.

Lin was born in New York, New York.  She received degrees from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, and Columbia Teachers College in New York City.  She was a Middle School English teacher in Somerville, Massachusetts and chairman of the English Department at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, New York.  She married her husband, Tracy, in 1970, and they have three grown children, Brian, Michael and Kathleen.  Since 1983, Lin has volunteered her time, talent and skills to our community.
